A Bibliography of Books on the History of the African American Phase of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement: Volumes Published Since 1990
Compiled by J. Gordon Melton (January 1, 2023)
This work builds on the pioneering bibliographical work of Charles Edwin Jones:
Jones, Charles Edwin. Black Holiness: A Guide to the Study of Black Participation in Wesleyan Perfectionist and Glossolalic Pentecostal Movements. Metuchen, NJ: American Theological Library Association/Scarecrow Press, 1987. 388 pp.
And of Sherry DuPree
DuPree, Sherry Sherrod. African-American Holiness Pentecostal Movement: An Annotated Bibliography. New York: Garland Publishing, 1992.
It concentrates on works of history, biography and autobiography published since 1990 and thus does not include works in the larger fields of theology, ethics, and ecclesiology.
Also, not included: histories of local churches, biographies of Pentecostal lay people who made their mark in a secular endeavor; books primarily for a juvenile audience; and books primarily about missionaries serving outside of the US. This list also includes works on Daddy Grace, who in spite of his flamboyance, operated in a Pentecostal world as does the United House of Prayer for All People which he founded. In like measure, not included are works by and about Father Divine and Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, (aka “Rev. Ike”), both of whom operated out of a metaphysical New Thought context and showed no interest in Pentecostalism.
It also does not include the many works relative to the Azusa Revival and William J. Seymour and his associates.
The bibliography presents its material under six broad subjects as follows:
Reference Words
General Studies
Black Pentecostals in Predominantly White Churches
Works concerning Trinitarian Churches
Celebrity Personalities
