About the Dixon Pentecostal Research Center
General Introduction
The Dixon Pentecostal Research Center is a specialized research library of resources related to the Pentecostal and Charismatic Movement as well as the archives of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn.). We also hold a growing collection of artifactual objects, some of which are on display at the center or the Church of God International Offices. As the official archives of the Church of God, we advance the knowledge and use of the movement’s history and heritage through research, teaching, publications, and exhibitions.
Because we are a special collection committed to preservation, no holdings may leave our Reading Room. However, many items can be duplicated for research purposes.

History
The Dixon Pentecostal Research Center began as a special collection in the Lee College Library in 1971. Library Director LeMoyne Swiger and her staff had previously assembled a small collection of books by Church of God authors. When Charles W. Conn became president of Lee in 1970, he recognized the value of developing an extensive collection of materials related to the global Pentecostal Movement. At that time, there were very few scholars, Pentecostal or not, interested in the movement. The college created the Pentecostal Research Center, raised a modest budget, moved its Pentecostal books into a small room, and hired a part-time director. According to Charles W. Conn, the purpose of the Pentecostal Research Center is “to preserve for future generations those things of the past that have made us what we are.”
The Church of God General Assembly adopted this vision and responsibility to preserve Church of God and Pentecostal heritage in 1980. Lee College President Charles W. Conn, Church of God School of Theology Seminary President Cecil B. Knight, and General Overseer Ray H. Hughes presented a plan to construct a Pentecostal Resource Center that would include both a library and the Pentecostal Research Center in order to serve students of both educational institutions, scholars, and the general church. On August 16, 1980, the General Assembly approved their proposal.
The Preface of the 1980 General Assembly Minutes vividly describes the General Assembly’s commitment to this vision. Written by General Overseer Ray H. Hughes, the Preface recounts, “During one of the business meetings, when the program of the Pentecostal Resource Center was being presented, the Holy Spirit gripped the congregation in an extraordinary fashion. The people began to come forward and lay their gifts upon the pulpit, amidst the rejoicing and shouts of the congregation. This move of the Holy Spirit resulted in an offering of $200,000 toward the Pentecostal Resource Center. This sovereign act of the Holy Spirit brought healing to the body of Christ and the entire General Assembly was refreshed through an offering.”
Upon completion of our current facility in 1985, the Church of God designated the Pentecostal Research Center as the archives of the denomination and named the center in honor of Hal Bernard Dixon Jr.
